This section is to aid the do-it-yourselfer with the information needed to successfully order and install our wooden garden side gates or wooden driveway entrance gates by using our easy how-to steps. Please remember we are a made to measure service so we will make to what ever size you require.

When using the price guides on our website, the prices are per gate and plus v.a.t. If you have an in-between size, use the next size up for accurate pricing. If you do have an odd size which is not on the pricing guide then its always best to email you order or send a letter in writing to cover both parties from human error against sizes etc. Dont hesitate to contact us for any help, we are here to help you and guide you through etc.

Step 1

Which Gate?: Firsty you need to establish which style of gate you require from our website which meets your requirements.

Step 2

Posts Or Wallplates: You then need to establish do you need timber posts or wallplates.  (Wallplates are timber uprights which are bolted onto an existing wall/pillar/column allowing you to attach your hinges easily.  It sometimes makes many customers life easier, to have the posts or wallplates installed first, this then leaves a more accurate measurement to assertain what size gates are needed.

Step 3

Measuring Your Width?:  When measuring, you need to take measurements at two point, the top and the bottom.  Sometimes, posts/walls/pillars are not always completly vertical, so its up to you to assertain which sizes you need to allow.  If its a case of 5-10mm then this is not really a problem, but we would advise using adjustable hinges to help make both sides even etc.

Step 4

How Much Clearance(s) Do I Need To Allow?: Please remember to allow clearance for your gates.  On a Pair Of Gates we recommend to allow 30mm overall.  This will leave 10mm either side and 10mm in the closing centre.  Every pair of gates are supplied with a centre closing strip to cover the centre gap so no need to worry.  For Single Gates we recommend to allow 20mm overall.  This will leave 10mm either side for clearance.

Step 5

Measuring You Height:  When measuring for the height needed for your gate(s), please allow 50mm (2") from the ground level to the height you need at the hanging side.  Please make sure to allow clearance for any high spots in the ground as opening and closing them over these high spots would damage the gates.

Step 6

My Driveway Is Sloping:  If you driveway is sloping from front to rear or rear to front, the easiest way is to make sure the gates opening away from the ground.  Otherwise, (helpful tip) setting the hinges up offset between one another before hanging the gates will raise the gates.  All depending on how much you offset the hinges is all depending on how high you need the gates to raise.  Please note: offsetting the hinges will show the gates are not vertical when fitted so please bear this in mind.
